Casino Royale (2006) is a thematically faithful adaptation of Flemings influential novel, a masterpiece and the greatest James Bond movie ever made. Here is a comparison I made between the movie/novel & my thoughts on both of them.

Over the last week I read Ian Flemings first James Bond novel Casino Royale for the first time and later re watched the movie. Here are some thoughts on both, including a comparison of similarities, differences and the over all enjoyment I get out of both of these pieces.
Technical aspects:
Casino Royale (novel, 1953), written by Ian Fleming [27 short chapters, around 250 pages, depending on edition]
Casino Royale (movie, 2006), directed by Martin Campbell [144 minute runtime]
Before diving into further comparisons, there are two obvious, but also significant differences between the movie and the novel. The first being the time it is set in, both are contemporary to their release date. Meaning the novel is set in the Cold War whereas the movie is set in the 21 century. Because of the resulting differences in international relations historically speaking, you could transfer it (but you don't have to) to the second difference. Flemings novel is a political espionage thriller, whereas Campbells movie re-boot is basically an action movie.
----------
Structure:
The over all plot of the movie is very similar, nearly identical to its source material.
James Bond, a fresh 00, is set in a high stakes Poker game against Le Chiffre, a desperate (& near bankrupt) banker working for terrorist organizations. Bonds allies are Mathis, Felix Leiter & Vesper Lynd. Bond wins the money, Vesper & him get captured, following the torture, Le Chiffre being interrupted/killed by a member of a mysterious organization. After Bond & Vesper seek a happy life, the latter is confronted with her "real" identity/past & kills herself, leaving Bond emotionally broken & eventually cold.
As said in my first paragraph, Flemings novel isn't an "action" novel. There is an early assassination/botched bomb attempt in the early chapters (similar to the airport sequence) but it's nowhere near as action heavy as the movie, which follows parkour chases, knife fights & bus/plane explosions, stairway fights & the closing crumbling house set piece.
Narratively Bond meets his allies way earlier, in the movie Vesper & Mathis are introduced around an hour in, whereas in the novel already in the first few chapters, Felix Leiter is introduced very late in the movie and only after Bond is struggling in the Poker game. The whole Dimitrious, Ellipse stuff isn't in the novel.
----------
Main characters:
- James Bond:
Bonds portrayal is very close to the novel. He's described as a very tough man, perfectly shown by Craigs physical appearance, his hard & masculine face & the early corporal fight scenes & chases. His attitude fits the source material. Bond is smart & charming, but he can switch of in any moment to being a ruthless killer.
- Vesper Lynd:
A big part of Vespers character in the novel is her beauty. There are long passages describing everything about her body & face. She certainly is beautiful in the movie, played by the gorgeous Eva Green. Yet in the movie she comes across as much more independent & aware. She's smart in the novel, but much more worthy in a psychological duel with Bond in the movie. In both the movie & novel she is a double agent, who got blackmailed & had to take this identity in order to save her boyfriend, but then fell in love with James.
- Le Chiffre:
Le Chiffre, in both movie & novel is a scary fucking dude. There still is something a bit charming about Mikkelsen presence though. He's described as considerably ugly in the novel, and basically as the epitome of evil. In the movie he comes across as more "human", desperation etc (make no mistake he's a vicious bastard, but he's not the devil).
- M:
The obvious difference is the gender swap in M. In the novel, Bond respects & in some way even fears M. The Bond/M relationship of Flemings books never really translated onto the bigger screen (it's tough to find someone intimidating against the charisma of Connery to be fair) so the change is an interesting touch. While he certainly respects Judi Denchs M, there is more slick and clever dialogue coming out of the conversations.
----------
The Poker Game:
The Poker game in the novel, as basically all of it, is set in France, whereas the movie jumps around Madagascar, the Bahamas, Venice & Montenegro, the latter being the setting of the poker game.
Also, in the novel they play Baccarat, which was very popular at that time, in the movie they play Texas Hold 'Em, which (surprise) was popular in that time. The game itself is similar structured, back and forth until Le Chiffre wins a big one and Bond is in huge desperation but comes back in the last round winning all of it (with the help of Felix Leiters money).
In both movie & novel, Le Chiffre tries to prevent/"attack" Bond during the last hand. In the movie he gets poisoned, which nearly causes him to pass out. In the novel, he is directly physically threatened by a bodyguard of the Le Chiffre with a gun under the table/chair.
--------
Remarkable similarities:
- Practically the entire torture scene is directly taken out of the source material. Bond gets stripped naked and tied up to a chair, then punched to the balls multiple times until the near pass out. Only difference is that in the movie Le Chiffre uses a rope, in the novel it is a carpet beater.
- Some dialogue & lines are extracted out of Flemings novel. Such as the VespeMartini order.
>Three measures of Gordons, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?
Or the iconic line.
>The bitch is dead.
---------
Other differences:
- The whole Mathis alleged double cross plot point only appears in the movie.
- Vespers double cross, signaled by her seeing the man with the eye patch is left to a good bye letter in the novel that Bond reads after she'd poisoned herself. In the movie, she gives the man with the eye patch the money briefcase and after the shoot out in Venice, she traps herself in the elevator and drowns in the crumbling house.
- In the books, the mysterious organization is SMERSH, a russian anti spy organization. In CR it is still unnamed, though in the later Craig films revealed to be SPECTRE.
- The book ends very depressing as her betrayal letter is the last thing. The movie ends on a higher note with Bond capturing Mr White & ending the movie in his iconic introduction lines.
---------
I have certainly missed a ton of differences of both, but I feel like I have done enough to highlight most of them. Here are some of my personal thoughts:
The novel:
I had a ton of fun reading it for the first time. It's certainly colder & much more serious than a lot of James Bond movies but I liked that it felt more grounded and had espionage instead of thrills. There is a lot of political subtext added by Ian Fleming that reflects on the cold war and on spy agents themselves. It also features some great insight on the Poker game as Bonds mind is on full display with mathematical & stochastically relevant information throughout every hand. I think it ends on a very depressing and sad note, setting the tone for the character to come.
The movie:
I have always considered Casino Royale to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it's head and shoulders above every other James Bond film and every time I watch it I discover new things I love about it. The way the movie starts, with the cold blooded double-O earning in a noir fashion, then goes over to the gorgeous credit sequence with so much ingenuity sprinkled across it, is amazing. I'm also amazed by the action the movie has. The Parkour chase has some terrific stunt work & innovation. Or the airplane sequence is packed with enormous tension and suspense. Or the closing Venice shoot out is packed with bad ass moments by Bond. A lot of my love for the movie also comes from the cast. It does contain my a.) favorite Felix Leiter (played by Jeffrey Wright), b.) favorite Bond girl (Vesper Lynd by Eva Green), c.) the best M (played by Judi Dench) and one of my favorite Bond villains (played by Mads Mikkelsen, who is as terrific as ever). Martin Campbell has rock solid directing, focussing on the great stuff of the source material and just like in GoldenEye knowing how to introduce a new Bond & a new way of Bond into the franchise. Daniel Craig is relentlessly amazing. He has the charms, he definitely has the looks, he is believable in the kills, he has a soul, he has a heart, he has emotion. Only Connery is better. The movie also looks gorgeous. Not only its vast settings of exotic locations, beautiful women, high class restaurants, cafes or hotels, pieces of clothing and so on, but also its sharp image and cinematography, by Phil Meheux is astounding. Despite being literally written by three people it also contains some ingenious dialogue. Especially the Bond/Vesper interactions flow so crisply and soft. It's a joy to watch every second of it and I could be talking about it for hours.

All in all, Casino Royale is a great novel and in my opinion, an even greater movie which is a faithful adaptation but also adds many layers and new things to it, knowing that it already is part of a 20+ movie series and therefore adding nostalgia, references or treating its timeless main characters legacy with honor and self reflection.
What do you think about Casino Royale, both the novel & the movie?

A poker game with some WWW twists

First post here, please be gentle.
Instead of a battle of strength, or a battle of stealth, or a battle of endurance, lets have a (slightly more sedated) battle of wits! Eight brilliant characters playing a high-stakes Texas Hold 'em game.
The Premise
Each player has a reason to be at this table, as hopefully will be explained later. The buy-in for the game is $10 million, with a $5 million rebuy, winner takes all. Before entering the room, each player is meticulously searched and all items are confiscated for the duration of their time in the game.
The Venue
A poker game of this nature requires a special venue. Therefore the game shall be held at the Casino Royale in Montenegro. (I'm unsure if it is a real place, but if not assume it is the place from the James Bond film of the same name.)
The Contestants
In the interest of being thorough, I have included a description next to each player, to give some background as to why exactly each of these people is at the same $10 million poker game.
Your Job
Say it with me everyone: who would win? You know the contestants, you know the arena, and you know what brings each of them there. Who walks away with the $80+ million? Bonus love and internet points to people that come up with the coolest stories.
Also, as an aside, how did I do with the whole backstory thing? Feedback greatly appreciated.
TL;DR: names are in italics, which one of them wins in a Casino Royale style poker tournament?

12 Best Movies like Argo (2012)

In 1979, the American embassy in Iran was invaded by Iranian revolutionaries and several Americans were taken hostage. However, six managed to escape to the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador and the CIA was ordered to get them out of the country. With few options, exfiltration expert Tony Mendez devised a daring plan: create a phony Canadian film project looking to shoot in Iran and smuggle the Americans out as its production crew. With the help of some trusted Hollywood contacts, Mendez created the ruse and proceeded to Iran as its associate producer. However, time was running out with the Iranian security forces closing in on the truth while both his charges and the White House had grave doubts about the operation themselves.

Still, Mike has to figure out a way for retribution for what Connor did, while still protecting him and his family, not only from Connor, but from John and his fellow associates. October 31st, 2016: Inaaace Interview

Tell us a little about yourself.
Born in Bosnia, raised in Montenegro. Played professional basketball (6’9” tall) until 2005, when I got a scholarship at Penn State. Got a degree in Finance, followed by Master of Science, followed by another bachelors of Computer Information systems. Live in Atlanta, GA with my wife Trish, cat Gucci Mane, and cancer. Work at a big medical institution in IT.
When did you first become interested in horror? Was there a specific moment you knew you wanted to write in that genre?
My brother got me into horror through scary comics - Dylan Dog. Fell in love with it since. I’d never written anything before my Orange story, so I never knew I wanted to write, at least until I read Penpal.
What is the most terrifying thing you have personally experienced?
Does cancer count? Being told at the age of 30 that you have a stage 3 serious and deadly disease is rough, man. Your whole life changes, your plans go to shit, and you don’t know how much time you’ve got left. That’s scarier than any ghost out there. But, it is what it is, gotta march forward.
How do you think the atmosphere of NoSleep has changed in the years since you first joined the community?
Well, it’s been what, 4+ years since I found you guys. We were a small, tight knit community at the time, and now, we’re million plus subscribers sub. Overall, though, I don’t think community changed much. There are still amazing writers, readership is there, hell, if anything, it’s easier to get your story out there and let it be seen. Funny thing, I submitted my Orange story (after 2 bottles of wine), my very first story, late at night when nobody was on Nosleep, and I woke up to 100+ messages. At that time, that was a huge success. Today, you can get that in an hour if you write something gripping.
Do you feel your perspective on writing has altered any since you began posting on NoSleep? If so, in what ways?
I don’t think so – I still write the same way. I know there was a lot of talk about clickbait titles, and you know what, I take some blame for that. I mean, compare my titles to Penpal, for example. "Footsteps" VS "I was a part of Queen’s Guard…" - I did notice more people follow my suite with titles, which caused some rule change I believe. I’m personally still in favor of long titles as it kinda gives the reader a little preview as opposed for them to have to click and read. Don’t forget, we live in an age where there’s no time for reading.
What NoSleep stories and/or authors have had the biggest impact on you?
Penpal and 1000Vultures without any doubt. I found it lurking Reddit – wasn’t even aware of NoSleep. Got glued to his story and knew I had to write my own. That story is far beyond anything else I read on NoSleep, including new hits that take the top of all time.
Other than writing, what are some of your hobbies? What other creative mediums do you enjoy?
I loved playing video games before being diagnosed. It’s a funny thing, you lose interest in most things once you’re told you have cancer. Netflix is my best friend these days.
The majority of your writing is geographically set in the Balkan Peninsula, specifically in Montenegro and Bosnia. What's the significance of those locations for you?
I was born in Bosnia and grew up in Montenegro. Those areas are also heavily sprinkled with creepy culture, from Baba Roga (equivalent of Babadook or Slenderman) to countless stories that would make you sleep with a light on.
The Story of Her Holding an Orange revolves around a woman named Rose who has followed your family for several generations. You've stated that it's a true story. How factual are the events in it?
There is truth to it. I won’t go into too much detail, but complete fiction, this was not.
After the story was posted to NoSleep, you adapted it into a novel, which you said would reveal the true ending to your encounters with Rose. That decision was met with controversy amongst some readers and other authors, who believed that was unfair to your audience. What made you decide to release the ending only in the book? Did the backlash effect how you approached writing subsequent work for NoSleep?
Ok, so realistically, “I took it” was the best ending. At that time, whole community followed the story and expected a satisfying end. “I took it” gave everyone a chance to write their own ending. True story – I wrote that at the gas station while driving to Atlanta.
After a while, I decided to give an ending in my book. I’ll be the first to admit that the ending was not up to par with the rest of the story, and maybe I should have finished the book with those 3 words as well.
Backlash didn’t change much else, as I still write with cliffhangers. Not a day goes by where someone doesn’t request the end to Queen’s Guard.
You've mentioned previously that you sold the film rights to Her Holding an Orange. Can you give us any information on the status of a potential movie?
It is still being pitched to different studios. Netflix reached out for original series as well, but not much happened. It’s a tough world out there with thousands of amazing stories.
Multiple fans have submitted artwork of Rose, and you've also held several free book days on social media in the past, allowing readers to purchase your novel free of charge. What role has community involvement played in your work as an author on NoSleep?
Community made what I am. They sponsored the book through a KickStarter, they were with me the whole way. I have 18k+ followers on FB. Without you guys, nobody would read a single word of mine.
What are your feelings toward NoSleep's immersion/believability rule? What impact, if any, do you think the suspension of disbelief format had when transitioning your work toward a mass audience unfamiliar with NoSleep?
I personally love the believability rule. I don’t believe in ghosts, demons, etc. The scariest is something we can’t explain, but is perfectly possible to happen. Like the orange story – not a single supernatural act. Same with Queen’s Guard. That’s what people like. Ghosts are overrated.
You recently announced in the OOC that you were battling cancer. Are you willing or able to give us an update on how you're doing?
Sure thing – so I was diagnosed with stage 3 esophagus cancer out of nowhere, at age 30. It was a shock obviously but I bounced back fairly quickly. I finished chemo and radiation, and have a huge surgery on November 3rd. After that, my hope is to be in remission. Cancer sucks ass, but there’s no escaping this body I’m trapped in.
Are there any topics you feel are too controversial for you to address or that you prefer not to explore in your writing?
Nothing is too controversial, though I have to admit I wasn’t into that NoSleep fad when everyone wrote about mutilation, sex, etc. To me, true horror comes from fear of unknown, not pain and suffering.
Do you have any favorite reader reactions to your writing?
Oh man, I get daily messages about my stories, and each one means a lot to me. Can’t believe I’m still touching so many people with something I wrote years ago. No particular reaction as I love them all.
What story or project are you most proud of?
Obviously, the Orange story is what started it all, and is probably my best work next to Queen’s Guard. But my personal favorite is Echo House because I worked really hard on it trying to tweak my style.
As a successful author on nosleep, do you have any advice for new contributors?
Write as if you were talking to me. Don’t go into overly long descriptions, let readers imagine it. It’s so much better in conversational tone. In this era, nobody wants to read another novel, short, easy to digest and simple writing is where it’s at.
What are your short-term and long-term writing goals?
Assuming I’m alive, I’d love to put out a story that happens in cinema, and one about a mailman that I’ve had brewing for a while. Long term, assuming I don’t die, I’d like to connect all stories with a backstory and make it an epic long novel that makes sense.
Community Questions:
From Clarimonde: Do you have any plans to write a sequel to "I was part of Queen's Guard in England"? I've always wanted to know what happened to Ashley. P.S. Hope you feel better soon
I don’t think so. I felt the end was good in a sense that it left everyone craving for more and imagining the rest.
From blindfate: Why do you hate citrus fruit?
It gives me heartburn and with my cancer that hurts even more.
From hrhdaf: The story of her holding an orange is so original and unusual. Can you remember what gave you the idea?
Two bottles of wine started this story. Lots of folklore tales from back home kinda developed me into a person who can easily think up something different and scary. I was also fortunate to have some ability to write, so combination of these produced the orange story, my proudest work by far.
From pavlovinthesun: Did you base Rose and the other people in black in your stories off anyone you actually know?
Rose exists, while people in black I have never personally met, my family has had many encounters, though.
From MikeyKnutson: Who's your favorite James Bond? Totally not a sex thing.
Daniel Craig because of Casino Royale, which was taking place in Montenegro!
From krstbrwn: Who is your favorite Backstreet Boy? How do you pronounce your username?
The one with the coat in “I want it that waaaay”. Username is pronounced enah-che.
From khuzdum: I don't have a question for inaaace.
I am a self-taught pianist, however, so I figured I could chime in in that regard instead.
And then I wondered what to dedicate to him, and I immediately thought of a particular ouverture from Bach's partita in D major, especially in light of what the great Bach interpreter Glenn Gould had to say about it in an interview once:
"This one, the D major--this is a funny piece by the way--despite the very heraldic opening, with it's trumpets blaring and it's timpani beating, despite all of that obvious formality, it has a curious kind of latin quality. [...] I guess I think of it as the most humane, the most benevolent of the partitas. It certainly does not have the transcendent aspirations of the e-minor [...], or the wit of the G major, or the charm of the Bb major; but it does have a very special kind of warmth, a kind of philosophical repose, that I think is really quite unique."
And I figured that covered all of the bases: a piece heralding the glory of inaaace's authorship; a piece with quiet, but not introverted outlooks on the human condition; a piece with naïve, persistent optimism in the face of the cruelty of this world. So I've recorded and uploaded the first of six movements of the partita in D major. [...] So here are my thoughts going out to inaaace to celebrate his fantastic oeuvre, with all the hope in the world of a safe recovery, and many bright and fruitful days to come.
I appreciate the piano composition, I loved it. The kindest thing someone from Reddit has done. Just wow.
Was this an inaaadequate amount of Inaaace?
Follow him on Facebook, or purchase his incredible book, The Story of Her Holding an Orange!
NoSleepInterviews would like to say an enormous thank you to the extremely talented and lovely inaaace for taking the time to grace us with this fascinating and insightful interview! You're a hugely pivotal part of NoSleep history, and a delight to work with! Totally worth our paralyzing fear of oranges, and the possible scurvy it may result in. We wish you a speedy full recovery, and hope to see more terrifying tales from you in the future!
We're gonna be taking a brief hiatus to complete a mandatory drug rehabilitation program thanks to an unfortunate crippling addiction to Halloween candy we've all developed simultaneously, but we'll see you back here on Monday, December 5th, when we speak to everyone's favorite mold covered organism, vainercupid! We'll be taking questions for her in the OOC Monday, November 28th! Until then, get lost in her Infected Town.
You can also check out our Vault interviews with some of your favorite NoSleep authors like megdonalds, nicmccool, and Skarjo, amongst many other wonderful writers! These are all the interviews that were conducted when the subreddit was initially created but never posted. They're a little shorter than our current format, but we all know size doesn't matter. >_>

Why Casino Royale is the best James Bond movie ever made

What I'm about to say will come as a shock to a few people. Some might even consider it sacrilegious. I know for a fact that there's at least one person on my list who would take offence and would probably issue a silent "note to self" fatwa to never to take anything I say seriously. Ever. About anything.
So here goes: I think Casino Royale is the best James Bond movie ever made. There. I said it. It certainly is my favourite James Bond movie, second only to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. I've watched Casino Royale more times than I can remember. I know almost every line by heart. Know narrative the beats like the back of my hand.
Recently, on a 12-hour KLM flight to Amsterdam, I decided to watch it again because -- Casino Royale! Little did I know that that would be the watch that broke the camel's back.
I'll save you the theatrics. Long story short, it was awful. They edited it for the plane, and did a horrible job at it. Someone decided to remove a line here and a line there -- little nuances they thought no one would notice because they weren't major plot points -- only that those nuances are exactly the reason why it's such a great movie. I first noticed that something was off on the train to Montenegro when Vesper Lynd came on the train and sat next to James. In the original cut, she said "I'm the money" and he replied "Every penny of it". In the airline cut, she said, "I'm the money," and then nothing.
I thought -- Hmm, maybe I'm misremembering things. Stress. Sleep deprivation. Old age. You know? In the original cut, not long after that, she said "...I will be keeping my eye on our government's money and off your perfectly formed ass," to which he replied "You noticed," and she said "Even accountants have imagination". Classic.
In the airline cut, she said "... I will be keeping my eye on our government's money" and then it cut to Bond ginning like an idiot. What. The. Fuck. Right? The worst part of this indiscretion was towards to end -- SPOILER ALERT -- after Bond was recovered from Le Chiffre and recovering his balls from all the torture, Vesper, sitting next to him said, "You know James, I just want you to know that if all that was left of you was your smile and your little finger, you'd still be more of a man than anyone I've ever met." To which he replied, "That's because you know what I can do with my little finger." Classic. In the airline cut, she said that same exact line, and it cut to Bond just looking at her, grinning like an idiot because an idiot edited it.
That was the point I lost it. I wondered how many movies I'd seen on the plane for the first time and hated without realising that they were edited by complete idiots. I vowed never to watch another movie on the plane. At least not for the first time. It's almost your civic duty as a consumer of culture not to consume culture tampered with by people who have no business tampering with culture. That's why whenever I'm on an international flight or a long bus ride, I take my iPad with me and load it up with movies I know for a fact are in the form the filmmakers intended for them to be. It's a 32GB wifi-only 4th Gen iPad with retina display, so you know that shit is clearer than HD.
This is the point in the story where I tell you that I've recently gotten a new iPad from work and therefore no longer in need of this other iPad. If you so choose to stand up for yourself and go against "the man" and his grubby little fingers messing up with your culture, boy have I got some good news for you: MY OLD IPAD IS FOR SALE!
I've had it for two years now, and I've taken really good care of it because culture is important yo. The media you consume gets in your head and changes you in ways you don't even notice, which is why it's important to respect your media consumption platforms. They are, for all intents and purposes, temples, and thus should be treated as such.
For me, selling this iPad is a revolutionary act -- my little way of subverting the systemic oppression of censorship -- which is why I'm letting it go for essentially the best offer I can get, whatever that is.
Fuck whoever edited the Casino Royale cut on that Royal Dutch Airlines flight, because they're probably not very nice, unlike my iPad (pictured) -- which could very well be YOUR iPad -- which is nice and saying hallo to you in Dutch, because unlike KLM, it will never fuck with your media.
TL;DR: I'm selling my wifi-only 32GB 4th Gen iPad with retina, and this is a lot of bullshit to convince why you should buy it.
