The crust (oceanic and continental) and the upper mantle form a rigid shell at the Earth’s surface known as the lithosphere. It is broken into different fragments, which are called tectonic plates. The meeting of two plates is known as plate margin. Scientists are still exploring how and what exactly makes tectonic plates move. There is different evidence that these are moving (i.e. GPS measurements). Tectonic hazards are hazard events caused by tectonic plates colliding into each other, moving against each other, moving apart or subduction between a less dense plate and a more dense plate. Examples of tectonic hazards include: Volcanoes - these occur when hot magma is forced to the Earth's surface through fissures and cracks in the Earth's crust. ‘average’ tectonic hazard, due to a series of factors coinciding (e.g. bad weather and recent deforestation will increase the tsunami travelling inland). What are the effects of tectonic hazards? There are two types of effects caused by tectonic hazards, these are primary and secondary effects. Primary effects are things that happen immediately as a result of a hazard. Secondary effects are things that happen in the hours, days and weeks after the initial hazard. Physical processes taking place at different types of plate margin (constructive, destructive and conservative) that lead to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The effects of, and responses to, a tectonic hazard vary between areas of contrasting levels of wealth. Primary and secondary effects of a tectonic hazard. Tectonic hazards are geological results of plate shifting exhibited by volcanic eruption, glacial erosion, tsunamis and earthquakes. Earthquakes are the most commonly reported hazards because of the greater likelihood of larger populations along major fault lines than in glacial or oceanic regions. Tectonic hazards do more than cause damage. The boundaries of tectonic plates are locations where movement creates a series of tectonic events such a earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. Which event occurs depends on the nature of the plate movement at that boundary. A natural tectonic event only becomes a hazard when people and property are affected.
